The Deanship of Information Technology and Distance Learning was founded with the consent of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Prime Minister and Chairman of the Council of Higher Education on the minutes of the meeting of the Ministry of Higher Education, No. 7013 / mb and the date of 28/9/1431AH. This approval arrived at the University in the form of an official letter from the Minister of Higher Education on 16/10/1431 AH. The approval came due to the decision of the Council of Higher Education No. (26/59/1431) dated 26/4/1431 AH based on the minutes of the University Council meeting held on 29/2/1431 AH.
The leadership of the University felt that it would be better for the Deanship to take responsibility for all of the information technology, distance education and e-learning programs and activities. However, these actions are assigned to two independent deanships in many universities today, though their presence under the one deanship allows more opportunity for success, especially in the establishment phase. These actions are specialized in the infrastructure of communications and networks that serve the electronic transactions, and provide distance education programs and e-learning services. Here we find that the complementarity between planning and implementation of infrastructure is very important for the development and delivery of the Deanship services and programs, which in turn must also complement each other.
